Schumer Announces Over $399,000 In Federal Dollars For Housing Programs In Western New York
Federal Funds Awarded To People, Inc. As Part Of The Section 202 Demonstration Planning Grant Program
U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced $399,251 has been awarded to People, Inc. in Western New York by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Section 202 Demonstration Planning Grant program. The funds will be used to establish apartments for low-income seniors in Lockport and Angola. "This is great news for Western New York" said Schumer. "For far too many seniors, the cost of living is so high that it forces them to move elsewhere, or move into substandard housing. This funding will increase the number of affordable apartments available for low-income seniors so that they enjoy the quality of life and sense of community Western New York has to offer.”
The grant award will be used by People, Inc. for the construction of affordable apartments for low-income seniors in Lockport and Angola. Many seniors in these areas are currently living in sub-standard housing, without the support they need to continue living independently. Founded in 1970, People Inc. is a leading non-profit human service agency serving communities throughout Western New York. The agency provides a variety of services, including residential, employment, community outreach, health care, and recreation programs. Today, the agency provides over 300 units of quality housing for low-income seniors in Amherst, Blasdell, Buffalo, Cheektowaga, Grand Island, and Hamburg.
The Section 202 Demonstration Planning Grant Program is designed to assist sponsors of projects that received Fund Reservation Awards pursuant to the FY 2005 SuperNOFA for the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program by providing predevelopment grant funding for architectural and engineering work, site control, and other planning related expenses that are eligible for funding under the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program. Funding under this program will provide resources for predevelopment costs that would otherwise not be reimbursable until Initial Closing or would be payable from funding resources secured outside of Section 202 Capital Advance funding.
