Schumer Secures $50,000 For Ken's Kids, Inc

Funding Part of the FY 2005 Omnibus Appropriations Bill

US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced Congress will pass $50,000 in federal funding for Ken's Kids Inc. The funding was included in the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations portion of the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The bill now heads to the President for his signature.

The funding will be used for three part-time vocational trainers to screen, train and place young adults with developmental disabilities in jobs at Home Depots throughout New York City. Currently there are eight fully screened candidates on a waiting list and a network of 39 Home Depot stores to fill n the Metro-Region.

"When I first heard about Ken's Kids, I was struck by the success of this program. These kids are provided with great training and employment which really opens some doors for them," Schumer said.

Schumer personally visited the Castle Hill Home Depot in the Bronx with Home Depot Co-Founder Ken Langone last March.

Ken's Kids is a successful nonprofit organization that helps developmentally disabled young adults achieve dignity and a measure of independence with jobs at Home Depot. Up to this point it has been privately funded, with some grants coming directly from Home Depot. Last March Schumer announced that his office would explore ways to bring federal assistance to support the Ken's Kids initiative.
