Schumer Announces Federal Dollars Coming To The Town Of Troupsburg

After Water Tested Positive For Ecoli And Other Bacteria, Federal Funds Will Be Used For Water System Improvements

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that a grant of $172,000 and a loan of $192,000 have been awarded to the Town of Troupsburg in Steuben County for improvements to the water system.  The funds are being awarded through the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development program as a Water and Waste Disposal Grant and Loan.

“This is great news for the Town of Troupsburg," Schumer said. “The water system is critical to the livelihood of the community and the health of local residents.  Clean drinking water is a basic need of all communities, and this money will help the town of Troupsburg meet that need, improving the quality of life for all.”

The Town of Troupsburg will use the funds to make water system improvements including: a new treatment building (with pumps, filters, flow meter, automated chlorination system and UV disinfection), a new permanent generator, and service meters. They are currently in violation with the New York State Department of Health because springs are directly influenced by surface water. Tests showed Ecoli and Total Coliform bacteria were present and that the reservoirs had cloudy water.

The USDA Rural Development Water and Waste Disposal Grant program provides funds to reduce water and waste disposal costs to a reasonable level for rural users. The grant program also sends funds to help develop water and waste disposal systems in rural areas and towns.  Grants can be used to construct, repair, modify, expand, and improve water supply and distribution systems; acquire needed land and water sources; and pay for legal and engineering fees when necessary to build facilities.
