SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE OVER $2 MILLION IN HUD GRANTS COMING TO ONONDAGA COUNTY

Federal Dollars to Promote Community Development, Provide Affordable Housing for Families, Create Jobs

Funding to Benefit Onondaga County, City of Syracuse, Town of Clay

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a total of $2,314,416 to Onondaga County, Syracuse, and Clay. This money is awarded through HUD's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and will be funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) to provide affordable housing, stimulate economic growth and create jobs.  The CDBG program has now awarded a total of over $1 billion through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“This is a triple-win for the City of Syracuse, Town of Clay and all of the residents of Onondaga County,” said Schumer. “These funds will stimulate economic growth in the community, create jobs and provide affordable housing at the same time.”

“This is a great investment for Central New York,” Senator Gillibrand said. “These federal dollars will help revitalize communities, help families afford a good home and get back on track, and help rebuild our economy. I will continue working with Senator Schumer to make sure New York gets its fair share from the federal government.”

The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program supplies communities with resources to address a wide range of development needs. CDBG allocates grants to states and other units of local government to revitalize neighborhoods, provide suitable living environments, and expand economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

The funding breaks down as follows:

CDBG

·                 $1,650,797 for City of Syracuse

·                 $77,553 for Town of Clay

·                 $586,066 for Onondaga County
