Funding Will Support Measures and Equipment To Secure Schools in Onondaga County
Schumer: Federal Dollars Will Make Local Schools Safer
Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) will provide a total of $349,000 through the FY09 Secure Our Schools (SOS) program to the Town of Camillus. The SOS grants will be directed towards purchasing safety equipment and developing security procedures at local schools throughout the area.
“Keeping students safe is essential in order to ensure our children get the best possible education,” said Schumer. “To keep our schools safe we need a thorough, multi-faceted approach to get results. This money will provide local schools with the resources, security training and safety measures needed to make sure our students have the safest learning environment possible. I will continue to fight for funds that protect our students in Camillus and throughout New York State.”
Funding from the SOS program will provide local governments with the ability to promote safety in community schools through additions such as metal detectors, enhanced lighting and building locks. Training procedures for students and faculty in coordination with local law enforcement will also be implemented.
