Schumer: New Vehicles Will Improve the Morning Commute, Reduce Costs

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that the Rockland County Department of Transportation will receive a $1,700,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to finance the purchase of 5 hybrid electric buses that will improve the commute for passengers who ride this transportation line every day and reduce the region’s transportation costs.

“Safe, reliable and affordable transportation is critical to the economic future of Rockland County,” Schumer said. “This grant is a win-win: it will improve the morning commute for hundreds of Rockland County residents, who will ride in more comfortable, state-of-the-art buses, and reduce transportation costs in the long term.”

The Rockland County Department of Public Transportation is receiving this grant from DOT’s Federal Transit Administration which works in communities around the country to improve transportation and reduce transportation costs. Rockland County will use the federal funds to purchase 5 new hybrid-electric buses that will operated by the transit provider ShortLine. The new 45 foot buses will replace older vehicles in ShortLine’s fleet that have reached the end of their useful lives and are costly to maintain.

Every day Rockland County resident board ShortLine buses as part of their daily to commute to New York City’s Port Authority. The new vehicles will improve the daily commute for those Rockland residents and reduce transportation costs over the long term.
