FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 9, 2012

SCHUMER, FOLLOWING GIANTS SUPERBOWL VICTORY, URGES TEAM TO RETURN TO UALBANY FOR 2012 TRAINING CAMP AS TEAM PREPARES TO REPEAT NEXT YEAR

Giants Were Forced To Train In New Jersey Last Off-Season Due To Lockout, And Have Not Yet Decided Where To Hold 2012 Training Camp

In Personal Letter To Giants Owners, Schumer Asks Team To Bring Training Camp Back To UAlbany This Year

Schumer: The March To Back-to-Back Super Bowls Should Start In Albany

Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer asked the Giants to return to SUNY-Albany for their 2012 summer training camp, following the team’s decision to train in New Jersey for this past season thanks to the NFL lockout. The Giants had trained at Albany for the past 16 years, with the exception of last season, and Coach Coughlin has praised the facilities many times. In a personal letter to Giants owners John Mara & Steve Tisch, Schumer congratulated the team on their win over the Patriots and asked the Giants to commit to training at SUNY-Albany this summer as they prepare to defend their Super Bowl title.

“Teams throughout the league are going to be gunning for the Big Blue, so it’s never too early to think about the campaign to defend their Super Bowl Champion title,” said Schumer. “The drive for a fourth championship should start in Albany, as so many past Giants seasons have. For 16 years the Giants have brought joy to thousands of New York fans in the Capital region, providing a shot in the arm for the local economy on the way. There is no better place to start next season than Albany, and I hope we’ll see the team there again soon.”

In his letter Schumer writes, “This week, you rode up the famed “Canyon of Heroes” in a well deserved celebration of a historic season, and I hope you, Mr. Tisch and the entire organization savored it. I know it’s hard to think about next year’s season, but I sincerely hope that the team will return to the University at Albany for training camp this summer.

“The relationship between UAlbany and the Giants has been a great one for the past 16 years. I know that Coach Tom Coughlin has praised the facility many times. The school made several upgrades in preparation for last year’s training camp but, because of the labor situation, camp was not held in Albany and fans, especially those Upstate missed it very much.

“So, as you start to plan for next year’s season, and a defense of your title, I sincerely hope that the New York Giants will return to our Capital city.”

The full text of Senator Schumer’s to Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch appears below:

Dear Mr. Mara & Mr. Tisch,

On behalf of all New Yorkers, congratulations on your great victory in Super Bowl XLVI!

As a lifetime Giants fan, it was such a thrill for me to attend the Super Bowl for the first time with my brother, and it’s something I will treasure forever.  No matter how busy my schedule is, I always carve out a couple of hours to watch Big Blue play.  But then, even as a kid my favorite Roosevelts were Brown and Grier!

This week, you rode up the famed “Canyon of Heroes” in a well deserved celebration of a historic season, and I hope you, Mr. Tisch and the entire organization savored it. I know it’s hard to think about next year’s season, but I sincerely hope that the team will return to the University at Albany for training camp this summer.

The relationship between UAlbany and the Giants has been a great one for the past 16 years. I know that Coach Tom Coughlin has praised the facility many times. The school made several upgrades in preparation for last year’s training camp but, because of the labor situation, camp was not held in Albany and fans, especially those Upstate missed it very much.

So, as you start to plan for next year’s season, and a defense of your title, I sincerely hope that the New York Giants will return to our Capital city. I know that there are thousands of lifelong and rabid fans Upstate that would love to see the Lombardi Trophy and their World Champion Giants this summer.
