WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) announced Tuesday that former U.S. Senator Dennis DeConcini will appear as a witness at a Senate hearing next week looking at Arizona’s controversial immigration law.
DeConcini, the Arizona Democrat, has publicly called for the repeal of the law, known as SB 1070. DeConcini represented Arizona in the U.S. Senate from 1977 until 1995. He is currently a member of the Arizona Board of Regents.
DeConcini is the third witness announced for the Senate hearing. Former Arizona state Senate President Russell Pearce—the original author of SB 1070—and State Senator Steve Gallardo—author of a bill to repeal SB 1070—are also confirmed to testify.
Additional witnesses for the hearing will be announced in the coming days. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer had previously been invited to testify by Schumer. She declined, even though a spokesman admitted she will be in Washington, D.C., on the scheduled day of the hearing.
The hearing is set for April 24—one day before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the case surrounding the Arizona law.
