Hi! Welcome to Chuck Schumer's New York City office.
The New York City office represents
Chuck in New York City, and coordinates the work of
the Senator's other regional offices throughout the state. The New
York City office is also where we help our constituents handle any
problems with the federal government. If there's anything we can do
to help you, please feel free to call us at 212-486-4430.
Chuck's Activities
Here are some highlights of what Chuck has done for New York City
during his tenure in the Senate. For a complete index of New York
City related press releases, please scroll down or click
here.
- Chuck's Group of 35, consisting of business, community, and
academic leaders, developed a comprehensive
plan to meet NYC's long-term economic needs by bringing 60
million square feet of office space and 300,000 new office jobs
to currently underdeveloped areas like Long Island City and Downtown
Brooklyn.
- In May, 2001, Chuck worked with with Jesse Jackson, Fannie Mae,
and the New York Bankers Association to fight
predatory lending in African American communities by creating
a new pilot program that helps
residents in Queens and Brooklyn obtain conventional mortgages
and home loans .
- Chuck secured $92 million to help New York City hire
over 1,000 new community police officers. In December, 2000,
Congress passed a version of Chuck's bill to provide over $125
million to clear
the rape-kit backlog, including a 15,000 rape kit backlog
in New York City alone. Chuck recently wrote legislation to
improve forensic evidence collection in hospitals across New
York City, helping police and prosecutors catch and convict people
who commit sexual assaults.
- Over the last two years, Chuck brought in $1.75 billion to improve
the New York-New Jersey harbor by deepening it to meet the
demands of modern container vessels, and obtained $83
million more to keep the work going.
- Working with the New York Congressional delegation, Chuck helped
gain $200 million in the FY 2001 budget to fund 60 projects
designed to help New York City's cultural institutions, harbors,
roads, mass transit, airports, parks, schools and hospitals.
- In July, 2000 Chuck unveiled a plan
to fight Medicaire cuts at NYC hospitals that had thrown the
system into crisis and then delivered
with a $405 million relief package later that year.
- Chuck has been a leader in the effort to solve New York City's
blood shortage
emergency. After giving blood himself and calling on New Yorkers
to do the same, donation
levels reached record highs, and Chuck teamed
up with the Yankees to offer New Yorkers incentives to donate.
Chuck has also has been fighting to make sure the federal government
does its part
to end the crisis , and worked with America's Blood Center
and the New
York Blood Center to arrange the donation
of 75,000 pints of blood, annually, to New York City.
- Chuck is working to bring fairness to the immigration process,
cracking down
on fraudulent immigrant consultants .
- Chuck obtained over
$45 million for NYC transportation projects like the East
Side Access Project, Whitehall and 38th Street Ferry Terminals,
Jamaica Station, the Van Wyck Expressway Corridor and LaGuardia
Airport, pulled
in $23 million more in subway funding, and led
the struggle against travel misery at LaGuardia, JFK, and
Newark.
- Chuck helped get H-1B Visas for 162 Canadian teachers in time
for the 2001
school year to alleviate the teacher-shortage crisis in our
public schools.
- After years of work, the Senate passed Chuck's
financial modernization law to bring one of New York's most
important industries into the 21st Century while maintaining and
enhancing competition and consumer safeguards.
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, Chuck has worked tirelessly
to help New York recover and rebuild. On September 13, Chuck, along
with Senator Clinton, secured a commitment from President Bush to
provide $20 billion in federal funding to help New York pay for
recovery and relief efforts. Chuck also helped create the federal
Victims Compensation Fund, which helps the families of those lost
on September 11 or anyone physically injured in the attack continue
with their lives by providing the family with all of the money the
person killed or injured would have earned over his or her lifetime,
all within five months of filing the claim. Chuck and Senator Clinton
also successfully lobbied for $5 billion in aid for New York in
the economic stimulus package pending before the Senate.
In addition, Chuck:
- Helped broker a compromise between Senate Democrats and the
Bush Administration to support the antiterrorism bill.
- Helped write new laws cracking down on money laundering.
- Wrote new legislation providing federal terrorism reinsurance
to make it easier for private companies to obtain insurance.
- Wrote legislation that would make terrorist
hoaxes a federal crime.
- Lobbied the NFL to hold this year's Super
Bowl in New York (at the Meadowlands in New Jersey).
