SCHUMER ANNOUNCES AZ STATE SEN. STEVE GALLARDO, FIERCE CRITIC OF SB 1070 IMMIGRATION LAW, WILL APPEAR AT SENATE HEARING NEXT WEEK

Senate Hearing on Constitutionality of SB 1070 To Be Held On Eve of Supreme Court Oral Arguments

Gallardo, Author of Legislation to Repeal SB 1070, Will Highlight Negative Impact of Law on Latino Community, State Economy

WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-NY) announced Monday that Arizona State Senator Steve Gallardo—a Democrat who has offered legislation to repeal the state’s controversial immigration law—will appear at a Senate hearing next week looking at the state law’s constitutionality.

Former Arizona State Senator Russell Pearce, the Republican author of SB 1070, has also been confirmed to appear at the hearing, which will be held on April 24th.

Gallardo, in his testimony, is expected to highlight the negative impact that the Arizona immigration law has had on the U.S.-born Latino community and on the state’s economy.

“Senator Gallardo has a unique perspective on the irreparable damage that this law has caused in Arizona,” said Schumer, the Chairman of the Senate immigration subcommittee. “He can offer a first-hand account of the impact that this statute has had on the state’s economy and on local communities.”

Additional witnesses for the hearing will be announced in the coming days. Arizona Governor Jan Brewer had previously been invited to testify. She has declined, even though a spokesman admitted she will be in Washington, D.C., on the scheduled day of the hearing.

The hearing is set for April 24, the day before the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the case surrounding the Arizona law.
