SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE NEARLY $10 MILLION IN HEAD START AND EARLY HEAD START FUNDING FOR MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY, INC

Funding Will be Used to Support Early Education for Low-Income Children In Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison County

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $9,687,500.00 in federal funding for Head Start and Early Head Start programs at Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. The federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be used to support child care services for low-income families in Oneida, Herkimer, and Madison County.  

“Study after study shows that the better we prepare our young children, through programs like Head Start and Early Head Start, the better they perform in school later in life,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal funding for Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc will bring real results to young students across the Mohawk Valley by providing them with the resources they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom. I am proud to support this essential funding and I will continue to fight to see that early childhood education remains a priority.”

“Head Start and Early Head Start programs help ensure that young children can access the care and education services necessary during their critical early learning stages to help them get a strong start in life,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These federal funds will help Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. support important educational programs for children and will reduce the cost of high-quality early childhood care for some of the most vulnerable families in our community. I will always fight in the Senate for the resources to support New York families with high-quality early childhood care and education.”

“Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency is honored to continue providing Head Start and Early Head Start services to 919 children and families of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison Counties. MVCAA has implemented Head Start in this community for fifty years and we know first- hand the positive impact it has on the families involved,” said Amy Turner, Executive Director, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc. 

Head Start and Early Head Start provide comprehensive child development programs for low-income children from birth to age five, as well as support and services for their families. Head Start programs primarily serve children aged three to five, while Early Head Start serves pregnant women, infants, and toddlers. The comprehensive services these programs offer include early education, health screenings, social and emotional health, nutrition, social services, and services for children with disabilities.
