Your interest in Senator Schumer’s internship program is a positive indication that you are an informed member of your community with a willingness to learn and contribute significantly to the Legislative branch of our government. This internship presents an opportunity for both a unique learning experience and an inside look at the political process. Applicants must be hard-working, have strong writing and communication skills and have a demonstrated interest in public policy. While applicants from all backgrounds will be considered, students from New York are strongly encouraged to apply. This internship program is best suited for undergraduate students.

Internships are available in the Washington, DC office and in each of Senator Schumer’s eight district offices, which are located in: Albany, Binghamton, Buffalo, Melville, New York City, Peekskill, Rochester, and Syracuse. Paid internships are available to interns who have been accepted into the internship program and are able to certify financial need and meet eligibility criteria.

Washington, DC Internships:

Interns in the Washington DC offices can follow one of two internship tracks: legislative or press.

Legislative intern duties include, but are not limited to: answering constituent phone calls, helping to sort constituent mail, assisting the front office with greeting visitors, and leading tours of the Capitol building. Interns will also have the opportunity to work with legislative staff on some policy work, such as attending hearings and briefings, drafting memos, and conducting research.

Press interns assist press and communications staff with day-to-day responsibilities, including: compiling press clips; answering reporter inquiries; organizing press conferences; writing press releases, talking points and memos; conducting research; and assisting the press staff with the day-to-day operations of a very active press office.
