On July 26th , 2024 , U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced more than $24 million in federal funding that he worked to secure through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. These funds are set to be used to revitalize Riverhead’s downtown, which is a project Schumer has long advocated to receive funds for. Schumer said this highly competitive national grant will provide Riverhead with a ‘rocket thrust’ towards reimagining their downtown so that it is safer and more accessible for the public. Some of the highlights of this project are reactivating the Peconic Riverfront for public use, implementing flood mitigation and a Complete Streets network, and constructing a new unit Transit-Oriented Development.
