Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
On February 22, 2022, joined by LI Community Hospital’s CEO, doctors and other staff, Senator Schumer made a formal push to expedite the hospitals $4.6 million dollars owed to it for its COVID response from FEMA. Schumer also revealed that other Long Island hospitals are still waiting for FEMA funds to be disbursed, too, and he made the case for swift action. Schumer also said FEMA has done incredible work amid the pandemic, and especially helpful work on behalf of New York, while urging them to keep it up with this most recent request to disperse federal dollars. Schumer secured historic funding levels to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) through the American Rescue Plan and prior COVID response and relief bills. As the pandemic continues to drain resources, many hospitals and health centers have exceeded and continue to exceed their normal and assisted operating budgets as they undertake emergency protective activities. FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program reimburses hospitals and medical facilities for these activities as they work day and night to protect our communities against COVID.
