On October 3rd, 2022, on the heels of Hurricane ‘Ian’ slamming Florida and other areas of the east coast, and with the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane ‘Sandy’ fast approaching, Senator Schumer said that Long Island’s owns plans to fortify some of its most critical and natural ‘firewalls’ along its own coast can move forward because of the recently-passed Inflation Reduction Act. Schumer revealed that because the Inflation Reduction Act passed, a climate change bill in many ways, that there is now $2.6B available that local governments and other entities can tap to conserve, restore and protect marine and coastal habitats. Schumer said he wrote this aspect of the bill with Long Island in mind and that ‘We want to fund the South Shore Estuary conservation effort,’ as he detailed how this will also translate into direct hurricane resilience, which on its own, is very hard to fund before an emergency.
