Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
On June 3, 2021 standing with boaters and local officials, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer made waves in a push to get the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to dredge the South Shore’s Jones Inlet. Schumer also announced: the just-out Biden administration budget finally does what the previous administration would not and funds the Inlet’s dredge, BUT Schumer said that $19 million dollars in funding faces a sea of agency bureaucracy that needs to be cut ASAP. Schumer detailed a laundry list of hurdles that remain under a normal dredge work plan as he made the cogent case to speed the process up. He cited safety, tourism, the upcoming hurricane season in the Atlantic, climate change and more in an all-out push to get the Army Corps to, quite literally, move heaven and earth to advance one of Long Island’s most critical dredge projects. Schumer explained that the condition of the inlet contributed to a fatal boating accident last year, where two men lost their lives while trying to navigate the inlet at Point Lookout. The Jones Inlet can become “sand-clogged,” creating large rolling waves, which makes it difficult for boaters to navigate. Dredging Jones Inlet is critical for safer navigation and needs to be completed ASAP.
