On 11/22/21, warning that Long Island schools remain a ‘favorite’ target of hackers and cyber villains, while standing with school officials at the Manhasset Middle School-Secondary School campus, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer revealed that help is on the way. Schumer announced that the just-passed Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill (BIF) includes a new $1 billion dollar cybersecurity grant program he championed to help Long Island’s school districts prevent future cyber-attacks and assess vulnerabilities in their systems and to protect vulnerable state and local entities across New York. Schumer urged local schools to ready their cyber defense and prevention plans, risk assessments, and other cyber resource needs to work with state leaders to secure a piece of this special $1B pot of DHS cyber funds to support schools and school districts at risk of cyber assault. Schumer said that on Long Island 13 school districts have been hit by cyber-attacks and data breaches between 2018 and 2020, alone.
