On 5/9/22 standing alongside Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Long Island recovery and community outreach staff and other officials, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced a national push the day before National Fentanyl Awareness Day, which is on Tuesday. Schumer launched and detailed his formal push to supercharge the federal funds that help the nation, New York and Long Island combat the public health crisis that is opioid addiction by $3.2 billion dollars. Schumer cited Newsday reporting data that showed how overdose deaths are a ‘perfect storm of two pandemics’ as he made the cogent case for the feds to increase three specific goals within the National Drug Control Program: preventions, treatment and recovery. Schumer pledged a $3.2 billion-dollar federal budget push to increase critical fed programs used by Long Island communities to defend against this public health scourge. Schumer said he has already spoken to the White House about his intentions, and both the Senator and the County Executive revealed new Nassau numbers that show the opioid addiction on Long Island continues to demand robust federal help.
