On May 24, 2021 standing with LIRR riders who are rightfully angry that they still cannot unlock their money they saved up pre-tax and set aside for their commutes amid COVID uncertainty and working from home (WFH) mandates, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, today, made a pitch to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to ‘figure out a solution,’ before he considers penning legislation to force a solution. Schumer said that many Long Islanders who were working from home, commuting by car to avoid crowds, out of a job or just uncertain of the duration of COVID were having their own money deducted pre-tax from their paycheck as part of a federal transit benefit program he ensured was on par with parking benefits. Now, for many, those funds have piled up to hundreds of dollars and they’re stuck in a transit account purgatory. Schumer said these unused transit benefit dollars should go back into riders’ pockets ASAP and riders spoke in support of more action being taken to unlock their funds, pay whatever taxes are owed, and move on.
