On 08/19/21 and on the heels of a rash of overdoses tied to fentanyl-laced cocaine on Long Island, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer warned that frontline advocates are also seeing other drugs laced with fentanyl, this summer. Those drugs include Xanax and heroin. Schumer said the tragic overdose deaths that just occurred on the Island prove the fight against fentanyl and opioids rages on. Schumer announced $1.6 million dollars from the feds is going to Long Island to create a recovery center on the East End, a new anti-drug coalition in Roosevelt, while boosting Hempstead’s, and that training and hiring of recovery staff will also ramp up locally, along with other efforts. More critically, Schumer said he is pushing to increase federal funds Long Island can access to help fight this scourge—made worse by the pandemic—to $9.6 billion.
