Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
In response to President Trump and Republicans' proposed cuts to Medicaid, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer gathered with leaders from Long Island substance abuse treatment organizations at Family & Children's Thrive Center in Westbury to issue a warning about how the cuts will dismantle the local war against opioid addiction and undo recent progress. The senator emphasized that the tens-and tens-of-million dollar cuts on Long Island will affect funding that directly supports addiction treatment, mental health services, and recovery support. Senator Schumer called Medicaid our best weapon in the fight against fentanyl, addiction, and opioids, as it is the largest payer for treatment services on Long Island with over 600,000 Long Islanders relying on it. Alongside the senator, local leaders from organizations such as the Family & Children's Association, Central Nassau Guidance & Counseling Services, Phoenix House, LICADD, and Family Service League emphasized the potential devastation to their operations and future plans, such as the Garden City-based Family & Children's Association's decision to halt plans for a $6 million treatment facility.Â
