On November 11th, 2024, standing at the Henderson Family Farm in Penn Yan, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today launched his two-pronged plan to boost federal funding to combat toxic algae found in the Finger Lakes region. Schumer explained that the Great Lakes and Finger Lakes have been threatened by harmful blue-green algal blooms which cause a threat to humans and animals if ingested. Schumer said that, without intervention, the number of algal outbreaks could continue to grow and contaminate drinking water for New York residents, as well as damage local economies dependent on tourism, fishing and recreation.
