Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
On June 27, 2011 Senator Schumer visited Crawford Furniture in Williamsville, Erie County. The Senator announced his opposition to proposed cuts to invasive species funding that could exacerbate Upstate New York's growing emerald ash borer (EAB) problem. The pest, which was first discovered in New York in 2009 and was discovered in Buffalo earlier this month, threatens the more than 23 million ash trees in Erie County and the timber and lumber business that they support. Crawford Furniture uses ash in its locally made products, and could be greatly affected by the expansion of the EAB. Schumer believes that these cuts would obviously provide short term savings, but ultimately make little sense in the face of looming invasive species threats that could have a devastating economic effect on communities throughout upstate New York. Schumer was joined by Congresswoman Kathy Hochul, along with officials from the New York State DEC, and officials from many local and state organizations.
