On July 20, 2015 Schumer urged the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to immediately reverse course on a plan that would drastically cut compensation rates for Video Relay Service (VRS) providers, like CONVO and Sorenson in Rochester. Schumer explained that VRS enables those who are deaf and hard of hearing to converse by telephone using a video American Sign Language interpreter who translates their words into English or Spanish in real time.
