October 23, 2012, Schumer participated in the groundbreaking for the Amityville Veterans' Housing Development, where his role was instrumental in the start of this project. Schumer called on the Department of Defense to transfer a former Army Reserve Base over to the Town of Babylon so that the $21 million dollar affordable housing project for at-risk veterans could move forward. He also was crucial in securing the necessary tax credits that made this project a reality.
