\nOn May 3, 2013, Schumer called on the Public Service Commission to take two major steps to address the serious concerns that he shares with Ulster County ratepayers, community leaders and other elected officials regarding the proposed acquisition of Central Hudson by Fortis. First, Schumer urged that the PSC extend the public comment period for another 30 days, which technically ended May 1st, so that ratepayers can learn more about this purchase and investigate serious concerns. The $1.5 billion transaction at a premium would have Fortis assume $500 million in debt, leading to the risk that ratepayers would have to absorb the cost of acquisition, and put upward pressure on rates.
