On August 24, 2010, Schumer visited the Broome County Office Building and discussed his efforts to streamline the FEMA Flood Map process. Schumer has called upon the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Army Corps of Engineers to work together when certifying levees that mitigate floods. A lack of coordination between the agencies could cost hundreds of thousands in local taxpayers' dollars. Schumer was joined by Barbara Fiala, Broome County Executive; Gerald Whitehead, Mayor of the Village of Whitney Point; Esther Woods, Mayor of the Village of Nichols and Frank Evangelisti, Acting Commissioner of Broome County Planning and Economic Development.
