\nOn August 8, 2013, Schumer visited Poughkeepsie to call on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to immediately allocate resources towards the study, prevention and treatment of the emerging Powassan virus threat. Schumer also announced his support for federal legislation to direct more resources and attention towards fighting back against the growing problem of other tick-borne illnesses like Lyme Disease and Babesiosis. He was joined by New York State Senator Terry Gipson, Assemblywoman Didi Barrett, Dutchess County Interim Health Commissioner Kari Reiber, Tick Task Force Chairwoman Donna Bolner, and Hudson Valley Lyme Disease Association Chairwoman Jill Auerbach.
