\nOn August 28,2012 U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer joined local law enforcement, contractors, and officials from Rochester Gas and Electric, the Rochester City School District, and Departments of Public Works to crackdown on the recent rash of scrap metal theft in the city that threatens critical infrastructure, local residents, and taxpayers. Due to the high price of iron, copper, and other metal in the market, the Rochester Police Department recently reported that coinciding with a major rise in burglary rates, scrap and copper burglaries have increased since 2007 and now account for up to 15 percent of all burglaries citywide and up to 25 percent in some neighborhoods. In 2011, Monroe County experienced a record spike with the theft of 192 manhole covers and sewer grates from local roads. So far in 2012, more than 125 have been stolen endangering pedestrians and motorists and costing taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars
