\nOn April 3, 2013, Schumer launches campaign for tigher control of hydrocodone, which is deadly on its own and often leads users to heroin. The lower Hudson Valley has experienced historic heroin busts and dozens of prescription drug-related deaths in recent months. Hydrocodone and Opioids are often at the root of this epidemic and are among the most highly abused and widely prescribed drugs. Schumer pushes to reclassify hydrocodone as a schedule II drug, due to its high risk for abuse and addiction. This would put stronger restrictions on prescribing and storing these substances, while still protecting those that need them. Key to stopping growing heroin use in the Hudson Valley is stopping original use of over-prescribed painkillers.
