\n\nOn May 1, 2013, Schumer visited Freeport to call on FEMA and the White House to increase the share the federal government is paying for repairing public property damaged by Sandy. Federal law requires that FEMA pay 75% of eligible costs after a disaster, leaving the rest to local governments. Once federal obligations meet or exceed $133 per resident, FEMA can then pay 90% of these costs. Schumer asked FEMA to move on with this request to prevent local taxpayers from footing the bill.
