Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
On October 23, 2015, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer said while the House has passed a unanimous bill allowing the extension of Federal Perkins loans, the Senate has failed to follow suit. The Perkins Loan Program provides low-interest loans to students who cannot borrow or afford more expensive private loans and provides fixed interest rates and loan forgiveness options. Schumer said that without an extension of this program, colleges and students will be in a bind as over 50,000 students received this aid annually. Last year, approximately $124,215,521 alone was provided to New York students and an estimated $1.7 billion to students nationwide. Schumer stated that if the Senate does not extend this program, roughly 1,700 colleges nationally and over 55,000 students will suffer as student withdrawal will rapidly escalate. Schumer added that the program is self-sustaining because colleges and universities service the loans through a revolving fund that is not costly to the federal government.
