On September 28, 2015, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer said cyber scalpers are using bots to scoop up thousands of popular concert tickets to resell on other websites at outrageous prices. Schumer pointed to a recent incident involving cyber scalpers using online computer programs, called “bots,” to purchase hundreds of tickets to see Billy Joel at Nassau Coliseum—just last month—which left some Long Islanders ticket-less. Schumer announced he is introducing legislation to crack down on the use of bots, which would help fix the broken system of ticket purchasing. Schumer said no venue is immune to bots and mentioned the upcoming Mets playoff game as an example. Schumer said hackers are likely going to take a swing at scoring tickets for this sporting event, as well.
