Schumer: Fed Investment Is Critical To Supporting Rochester & Harris Radio Jobs

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that Harris Radio in Rochester will receive a $22.5 million contract from the Department of Defense (DOD) to manufacture single channel ground-to-air radio system circuit card assembly parts. Schumer explained that these crucial radio parts will help keep the Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System “SINCGARS” radio systems up to date and help protect our troops using this technology overseas. It is a five-year contract with an estimated completion date of July 2021.  DoD received eight bids and competitively awarded the work to Harris as the winning bidder for this contract.

“This massive, and well-earned, $22.5 million contract will support existing jobs at Harris, as well as the 50 new jobs the SINCGARS production line brought to Rochester this past March. Harris Radio has proven, again and again, that they are capable of making superior radios and critical components for the most elite military in the world. Their radios are durable, dependable, and innovative, which means they have a long useful life to support some of the toughest missions around the globe,” said Schumer. “This contract will allow Harris and its top-notch employees to manufacture the updated equipment our dedicated men and women serving overseas need and deserve.”

Schumer fought long and hard to bring the SINCGARS system to Rochester last year. The manufacturing line was officially installed at the Jefferson Road facility in Rochester this year and is currentlysupporting 150 local jobs, including 50 new jobs so far. Harris consolidated and moved this line from out of state to Rochester with the support of Senator Schumer following Harris’ 2015 acquisition of Exelis. Following Harris’ acquisition of Exelis last year, Schumer urged Harris to expand in Rochester. Schumer organized a meeting in his Rochester Regional Office to bring Harris officials together with state economic development representatives for the first time in order secure this new SINCGAR production line.
