SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $148K IN FED FUNDS FOR THREE WESTERN NY FIRE DEPARTMENTS IN CHAUTAUQUA AND CATTARAUGUS COUNTIES

Federal Funding Will Be Used to Purchase New Equipment for Frewsburg, Jamestown & Hinsdale Fire Departments

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $148,819 in federal funding for three fire departments in Western NY. This federal funding was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. Specifically, $24,762 in federal funding will be awarded to the Frewsburg Fire Department in Chautauqua County to purchase heart monitors and other critical safety gear. In addition, $25,842 will be awarded to the Busti Fire Department in Chautauqua County and $98,215 will be awarded to Hinsdale Fire Department in Cattaraugus County, which will also use these funds to improve operations and safety.

“This much-needed funding will provide our Western NY firefighters with the funding they need to purchase the critical, cutting-edge safety equipment they need to protect the community and keep residents safe,” said Senator Schumer. “First responders are our primary line of defense – they put their lives on the line each day for the safety of our residents. That is why it is crucial we provide them with the resources they need to continue their important and life-saving work.”

“These fire departments will use this funding to invest in critical equipment that will help keep firefighters safe during emergency situations and enable them able to carry out their lifesaving work more effectively,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Our first responders are on the frontlines during emergencies and should have the most up-to-date equipment as they do their job protecting our community.”

“It’s great to get these grants from DHS and FEMA because they really help us financially,” said Daniel Sisson, Vice President and Safety Officer of Frewsburg Volunteer Fire Department. “That money helps keep our firefighters safe and allows us to purchase new equipment.”

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Department's United States Fire Administration. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to the applicants that most closely address the program's priorities and demonstrate financial need.  More information on the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program can be accessed at http://www.firegrantsupport.com/.
