Hospitals, Long-Term Care Facilities & Health Centers Heroically Responded To COVID Outbreak, Ripping Holes In Their Budgets To Hire Emergency Staff

Senators Say FEMA Funding – At A 100% Federal Cost Share – Will Reimburse The Healthcare Facilities For Costs; Funding Comes On Heels Of Over $3.6M Senators Delivered To Mohawk Valley Health System Earlier This Year

Schumer, Gillibrand: Federal Funding Will Give Mohawk Valle Health System Support It Needs To Keep Saving Lives

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $16,146,095 for the Mohawk Valley Health System from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to cover costs associated with emergency protective measures taken for their COVID responses. These funds will reimburse MVHS for contract services to provide additional emergency medical staff for three major areas: emergency department treatment, inpatient care, and clinical laboratory services, due to the increase in volume of COVID-19 patients. This funding is provided at a 100% federal cost share, which Schumer fought hard to include for NY since the pandemic began. This funding follows over $3.6 million Schumer and Gillibrand delivered earlier this year to reimburse MVHS for other COVID expenses related to the purchase of personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning/disinfecting supplies, and other COVID-19 emergency expenses.

“The Mohawk Valley Health System and so many other entities throughout New York heroically stepped up by increasing spending to hire emergency medical staff, while experiencing significant revenue loss, and working ceaselessly to help New York beat back this virus. I am proud to deliver this vital federal support to help the beating heart of the Mohawk Valley recover and continue to keep our communities safe,” said Senator Schumer.  “Upstate New York and its hospitals have been amongst the hardest hit in the nation, and with this major $16 million boost, the Mohawk Valley and its incredible workforce will receive the dollars they need, and so very much deserve, to keep saving lives.”

“Hospitals across the country are still feeling the strain brought on by the COVID pandemic. Mohawk Valley Health System is one of many that needed to bring on emergency medical staff due to the volume of COVID patients. I’m proud to fight for funding that helps New York’s health care professionals keep our communities safe,” said Senator Gillibrand.
