SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND SECURE $3.5 MILLION FOR THE VILLAGE OF TRUMANSBURG TO BUILD NEW FIRE AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES FACILITY, BOLSTERING EMERGENCY RESPONSE & COMMUNITY SAFETY IN TOMPKINS COUNTY
Senators Said New Fire & Emergency Medical Services Facility Will Enable Region To Better Respond To Emergencies & Expanding Service Area
Schumer, Gillibrand: Fed $$$ Will Help Our Brave First Responders Keep Tompkins County Safe
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced they have secured $3.5 million for the Village of Trumansburg in the soon to pass Fiscal Year 2024 appropriations bills for a new fire and emergency medical services (EMS) facility, increasing space for Emergency Service Vehicles and key staff, while improving vital infrastructure for the first responders. The senators said this federal funding will strengthen the ability of emergency services throughout the region by bolstering the only emergency services facility for the Village, ensuring communities are protected and increasing the Village’s capacity to respond to incidents, bolstering the safety of residents.
“This major federal funding I secured will provide our local first responders in the Village of Trumansburg Fire & EMS Departments with the federal resources they need to keep Tompkins County safe. With the Departments able to move forward on a new facility, the purchasing of new equipment, and hiring of additional staff, we are ensuring they have the best possible resources to protect residents across the region,” said Senator Schumer. “Every day, our first responders put their lives on the line to protect our communities, and these heroes deserve the latest equipment and facilities so they can do their jobs effectively and save lives. I am proud to have secured this $3.5 million to ensure the Village of Trumansburg fire and emergency services have what they need to protect our communities on the front lines for the long-term.”
“Investments in our first responders save lives,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This $3.5 million I was able to secure in the spending package will help build a much-needed fire and emergency services facility in the Village of Trumansburg that can accommodate more first responders and emergency service vehicles. With a growing service area, this investment will allow for rapid response to emergency situations and keep residents throughout Tompkins County and surrounding Finger Lakes communities safe. I am proud to have fought to secure this funding and will continue to advocate to deliver more resources to our brave first responders.”
Schumer and Gillibrand explained the funding will go towards a new EMS and Fire Station to provide sufficient space for both Fire and EMS staff and add more garage bays for 10 Emergency Service Vehicles to accommodate the growing staff, equipment and service area. The Department plans to use the funding for new utilities, access road(s), general site improvements and a new 22,000 sf building including garage bays, storage closets, restrooms, kitchen and break room, lounge, conference room, private offices, radio rooms, bunk rooms, decontamination/laundry room, and locker rooms.
The senators said this facility is critical for the region as there is no readily available alternate coverage for these two departments in the region. Currently, the Village of Trumansburg's EMS and Fire Station does not have the capacity or updated equipment needed to service the rapidly expanding service area, with Village’s EMS and Fire Station is now servicing the Town of Ulysses, Town of Covert, and the Town of Hector in addition for the Village's residents and businesses. Schumer and Gillibrand said these millions will enable the region to invest in the adequate emergency personnel and equipment to keep the community safe and handle future emergencies, improving the quality of life of Tompkins County residents and ensuring the long-term safety of surrounding communities.
